St John's College

Established in 1858, the College of St John the Evangelist is one of the oldest and most distinguished university foundations in Australia. Believed to be the first Catholic University College to be established in any English-speaking secular university since the Reformation, St John’s was a triumph for the emerging Catholic community of Australia. Nowadays we are a co-educational community of 180 students.

We are small by comparison with other colleges, but this is an advantage: the atmosphere is warm and friendly and the students support and encourage each other. Yet there is freedom and space to be oneself without constraint or pressure to conform.

The college possesses perhaps the most beautiful university chapel in Australia. Normally, Mass is celebrated with music at 5.30 pm in term time, and at other times by arrangement. Members of the whole university are welcome to attend.

It is also possible to become an Affiliated or non-resident Member of St John’s College, which gives the right to attend College Tutorials and certain other privileges.
